Lois "Loie" Carney

July 15, 1941 — April 19, 2024

.

Lois Elaine was born July 15, 1941, in Chickasaw County, Iowa to Clarence and Rita (Mishak) Zubrod. She grew up on the farm helping her dad raise crops and livestock, she enjoyed the summer work of raking hay and cultivating crops, so she could get a tan while working. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in North Washington, graduating in 1959.

Loie became best friends with Francis Carney in the fifth grade, he was a little older, but they began dating later in high school and were married on June 29, 1959. The couple was blessed with four children: Craig, Camie, Cary, and Cayla.  While Francis served in the Army, they made their home in California and Washington, and eventually moved back near home to Cedar Falls where they raised their family.  Her passion was being a mother and wife. She loved taking care of her family and showed that by being an amazing cook and having a well kept home. Her home was always inviting and was soon the home base for many teenagers that called her Mom. Loie could be described as feisty, spunky, and fun loving; she had to be with a family that loved to play jokes and constantly razz her. She loved the attention and laughter in her home. Loie was an amazing grandmother to her 5 grandchildren. She loved to sing nursery rhymes to them and always encouraged them.

Loie was diagnosed with Cadasil several years ago, along with some of her family members. She fought with grace and dignity and her family has rallied with the https://www.carney4cure.com/ raising money to help find a cure. Loie passed away April 19, 2024. In an ultimate gift and show of her selflessness and commitment to her family, she had arranged for the donation of her brain in an effort to move the science of her disease toward a cure for her family members with cadasil and the entire cadasil community.

Craig Carney was born March 11, 1962 in Tacoma, Washington while his father was stationed there. He was the oldest of 4 children born to Francis and Lois Carney. They made their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa where Craig attended school. He loved playing baseball and football while in school and has always been a sports fan. Graduating from high school in 1980, he then attended Iowa State University. He studied engineering before changing majors to business management. After graduating he moved with his buddy Mike Gebhart to Ohio where he managed a retail lumber yard.

His friend Mike has a sister Shelley Gebhart, Craig and Shelly hit it off and the couple married in 1990; and they were blessed with two boys: Sayer and Shea. They moved their family to Texas where Craig found great enjoyment in his work as vice president of several residential construction companies.

Craig loved to play pool, was a diehard ISU fan, and a movie buff. He loved watching the Honeymooners and other great comedies, many of which he would recite one-liners from. He had a talent for woodworking and could make fine furniture as well as whiteboards for the school his boys attended, or even oddities like pens.

There was never a dull moment with Craig, his sense of humor was always evident, and he was always quick witted, but that was Craig. Life changed as the CADASIL disease progressed in him. He eventually moved back to Des Moines to be near his family. His boys remained bright spots in his life and even in the last few years he would perk up at the mention of their names or when he was able to see them.

Craig passed away January 7, 2025. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois "Loie" Carney in April of 2024. He will be greatly missed by his boys, Sayer and Shea Carney; father, Francis Carney; and siblings: Camie Carney, Cary (Kathy) Carney, and Cayla (Karen) Carney; many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to his family and mailed in care of Pierschbacher Funeral Home, PO Box 509, 50049
